Valero Energy Corporation, listed on the NYSE under the ticker VLO, is scheduled to release its financial results for the third quarter of 2026 on October 22, before the market opens. Analysts have set the Zacks Consensus Estimate for Valero’s earnings at $21.23 per share, which represents a significant increase of 480.1% compared to the same period last year. This estimate has been adjusted three times upwards and once downwards over the past month. Additionally, the consensus estimate for Valero’s third-quarter revenue is $38.8 billion, indicating a 20.6% increase from the previous year’s figures.

Valero has consistently exceeded earnings expectations in the past four quarters, with an average surprise of 26.8%. However, current indicators do not suggest that Valero will surpass earnings estimates this time. The company’s Earnings ESP stands at -0.32%, and it holds a Zacks Rank of #1 (Strong Buy), but this combination does not guarantee an earnings beat.

Factors Influencing Valero’s Performance

Valero Energy’s performance in the third quarter is anticipated to be bolstered by strong refining margins. These margins have likely remained robust due to ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions in the Middle East, which have tightened the markets for refined products. Furthermore, attacks on Russian refining facilities have further constrained refining capacity, contributing to the tightness in the market. Low global inventories of light products have also supported refining fundamentals, potentially enhancing Valero’s profitability.

However, the company’s results may be affected by the elevated crude oil prices experienced earlier in the quarter. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average spot price for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil was $80.46 per barrel in July, $83.90 per barrel in August, and increased to $97.31 per barrel in September. These prices are significantly higher than those recorded in the same period in 2025. The rise in crude prices is expected to increase input costs for Valero’s refining operations, which could impact the company’s financial performance by affecting demand and pricing dynamics.

Valero’s Stock Performance and Valuation

Over the past year, Valero’s stock has risen by 190%, outpacing the 157.7% increase of the industry composite. In comparison, PBF Energy (NYSE:PBF) and Par Pacific Holdings (NYSE:PARR), two other major players in the refining sector, have seen their stocks increase by 213.6% and 145.9%, respectively.

Valero appears to be trading at a premium, with a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) ratio of 9.4X, which is higher than the industry average of 6.48X. In contrast, PBF Energy and Par Pacific have EV/EBITDA ratios of 5.82X and 3.51X, respectively.

Valero’s Strategic Position

Valero Energy is one of the largest independent refiners in the United States, with a high-complexity throughput capacity of nearly 3 million barrels per day across its refineries. The company’s Gulf Coast refining network provides flexibility in feedstock sourcing and access to high-demand export markets. Valero’s refineries are capable of processing various types of crude, including Venezuelan and Canadian grades, which typically trade at a discount due to their higher sulfur content. This capability helps reduce input costs. Additionally, Valero’s operational flexibility allows it to adjust product yields toward higher-margin products, optimizing its crude slate to capitalize on tighter global markets.

Valero maintains a strong financial and liquidity position, with a net debt-to-capitalization ratio of 11% at the end of the second quarter. The company has $7.9 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $5.3 billion in available liquidity from its bank facilities. This financial strength enables Valero to return excess cash to shareholders through share buybacks. However, the refining industry is inherently cyclical and subject to volatility, with margins and crack spreads heavily influenced by crude oil prices and demand for refined products, which may lead to earnings fluctuations.
