Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), the parent company of Facebook, is creating artificial intelligence technology designed specifically for Europe, taking into account the region’s linguistic, geographic, and cultural nuances, the company announced on Monday.
Meta plans to train its large language models using publicly shared content from users within the European Union on its platforms, such as Instagram and Facebook.
While Meta has used public posts from Facebook and Instagram to train parts of its new Meta AI virtual assistant, it has excluded private posts shared only with family and friends to protect users’ privacy, according to Meta’s top policy executive in a September interview with Reuters.
Last month, the company announced that it would begin informing Facebook and Instagram users in Europe and the United Kingdom about how it utilizes publicly shared information on its services to develop and improve AI.
